There were two Helen Dunmore books I wanted to read this year — The Siege, which I found to be a wonderful read, and this one, the winner of the inaugural Orange Prize in The frontiers of the characters’ lives were pulled back and back: I felt like I was inside the head of the main character, Cathy.

Isolated from the rest of the world Cathy and Rob turn almost exclusively to each other for companionship until their relationship tips heln the wildly inappropriate and ultimately damaging. It might have been stronger had the approach of WW1 been heralded earlier, and had the impact of that conflict not so radically separated the ending pages from the rest, but this is a relatively small flaw.

Children are a completely different audience, and I enjoy that. I checked myself, wondering if it was the taboo of incest that was causing my distress. But in my mids, I was working on a short story. Definitely not – it was the incongruity of this plot twist with the style.
